Water lines are quite sturdy, but they do age. If your home was built in 1950 or earlier, you could be dealing with a water line that may need replacement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to average lifespans from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, different materials used for main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carneyphc.com\/plumbing\/sewer-water-line-replacement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">water lines<\/a> may last:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Brass \u2013 40\u201370 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copper \u2013 50 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Galvanized steel \u2013 20\u201350 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cast iron \u2013 70\u2013100 years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PVC (polyvinyl chloride) \u2013 indefinite<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lead \u2013 100 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, how can you tell if your water line may have developed a leak? Here are some common signs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yard puddling<\/strong> \u2013 Water main lines run underground and directly into your home. If a leak develops beneath your yard, the surrounding ground may become saturated, causing soggy areas or puddles at the surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carneyallseasons.com\/blog\/how-to-detect-plumbing-leaks-in-your-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Very high water bill<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 If you notice a sudden, significant increase in your water bill without an increase in water usage, you may have a water main leak.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carneyallseasons.com\/blog\/common-water-line-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>Significant decrease in water pressure<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 If the faucets and showerheads throughout your home suddenly have much less water pressure, a leak may have developed somewhere in the system.
