Do You Need to Consider AC Replacement for Next Year?

It’s not something most homeowners want to think about because it’s a big decision and an expensive proposition: replacing your whole home air conditioning system. It can be an even harder decision when your AC is still operating – but one of the questions to ask yourself is: how well is your existing air conditioner operating? Just because your AC is still running doesn’t mean it’s running well, or that it is doing the job you need it to do. To help you discern whether or not your air conditioning system has another cooling season in it, it’s important to review these critical factors:

  • How is the performance? – Performance isn’t just about energy efficiency, although this is a big part of a well-performing system. Performance also includes whether or not your existing system can reach your set temperature, dehumidify your home as needed, offer even cooling, and be energy efficient, all at the same time. If you are having significant problems with any of these facets, or experiencing more than one problem, then it’s time to consider replacement.
  • How many repairs have you made, or do you need to make? – Every air conditioner will need to be repaired at one time or another, but if you have needed to make multiple repairs to keep your system running, or have large repairs in your future, you need to weigh the cost of these repairs against installing a new, reliable system.
  • How old is your air conditioner? – Age is a major factor when deciding on replacement, especially when combined with the other two factors. The average lifespan for a traditional split system AC is 10-15 years; a heat pump’s average lifespan is 20-25. Most repairs that your system will see – about 85% – will occur during the last two years of the system’s life. As such, if your AC has reached maturity, it may be time to consider a new system.
