When to Call for Air Conditioning Repairs

Summer is not far off now, and the weather is already beginning to warm up. As the temperature rises, you’re probably going to start relying on your air conditioner more and more to keep your home cool. That added usage translates to more strain on the system, which means a higher chance for things to go wrong. Let’s take a look at some of the common air conditioning problems that you should look out for this season.

Refrigerant Leaks

Your air conditioning system helps keep your home cool by siphoning heat from the air and venting it outside. This is done by evaporating refrigerant in the inside unit to absorb thermal energy from the ducts, then condensing it back into liquid in the outside unit to release heat out of the home. Refrigerant is not consumed during this process, but is recycled between liquid and gaseous states during operation. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid that it needs to operate properly. This will cause a steady decrease in output, followed by an eventual full system breakdown. Call for repairs as soon as you notice any sort of liquid leaking from your air conditioner.

Air Handler Issues

The air handler is the part of the air conditioner that is responsible for circulating air throughout the house. It’s a big job, and it generates a lot of friction for the air handler. In order to cope with the strain, the air handler motor is equipped with oiled bearings that help it to run smoothly. These bearings will eventually wear out, though, and will need to be replaced. If not, the friction on the system will increase until it eventually burns itself out. If you hear a grinding sound coming from your air conditioner, call for repairs before the bearings fail completely.
