Look Out for These Ductless Problems

We’re coming to the end of summer, and before long most people will be shutting down their air conditioners in favor of their heating systems. If you’re using a ductless system, though, you’re going to be running it throughout the winter as well. That means that you still need to be on the lookout for any ductless problems that might crop up. Let’s take a look at some of the different problems that can afflict your ductless system, and how you can identify them.

Refrigerant Leaks

A refrigerant leak is one of the worst things that can happen to any air conditioning or heat pump system. Your ductless system relies on refrigerant to transport heat from one place to another. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will start to drain the system of the fluid that it needs to properly heat or cool your home. Be vigilant for any drops in output, or fluid dripping from the system. That tends to indicate a refrigerant leak.

Short Cycling

If your ductless system is turning on and off every couple of minutes, you have a short cycling problem. Short cycling is often caused by an electrical problem, like a short between the thermostat and the system. A short cycling ductless system will wear down much faster than a healthy system, shortening its lifespan by a number of years. Parts will also break down more frequently, costing you more in repairs. If you notice this happening, shut your ductless system down and call for repairs immediately. Otherwise, you may have to replace your entire system much sooner than you otherwise would.
