How Often Should I Schedule Drain Cleaning Services?

lime-scale-buildupIt’s never a bad idea to dedicate some effort to maintaining your drain and sewer system. Many people take an “out of sight, out of mind” approach when it comes to those parts of their homes. Just ignoring it, though, only guarantees that any problems it develops will get worse over time. You don’t want to wait for your drain and sewer system to break down entirely before taking steps to address it. One of the easiest ways to keep your drain system functioning properly is to call for drain cleaning services on a regular basis.

Signs You Need Drain Cleaning

So, how can you tell if it’s time to schedule drain cleaning services? There are a number of signs that your drains are in need of some professional cleaning. First, you should keep an eye out for slow drainage. Many drain clogs don’t form right away. Instead, they are created over time as waste sticks to the walls of the drain pipe. The closer the clog comes to being completed, the more it will restrict the flow of water through the pipe. If your drains are draining more slowly than they should be, that’s a clear sign that you need to schedule drain cleaning services.

You should also beware of any horrible smells that start rising from your drains. Bad smells are a common indicator that you need drain cleaning. This is especially true with kitchen drains, as they have to deal with food waste more frequently. Professional drain cleaning should get rid of the bad smells, and take care of any other problems the waste might cause with the pipe. Take note, though, that if the smells are coming out of every drain in the home, you might need more extensive plumbing services. That is often an indicator that the problem is rooted deeper down in the sewer system.

Annual Maintenance

Even if you don’t happen to notice any obvious signs that your drains need cleaning, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for drain cleaning. Many of the issues that require drain cleaning to solve are subtle, and won’t immediately display warning signs. So, even if you don’t notice anything that makes you worried for your drains, there may still be issues with them. Annual drain cleaning is a good way to make sure that your drains stay in good shape year-round. In fact, it can often prevent issues from forming more easily in the future.

There are two common drain cleaning methods that your plumber is likely to use. Drain snaking uses an auger on a long cord to drill through any clogs it meets in the pipe. Hydro jetting uses a high-pressure stream of water to blast any collected waste out of the drain pipe. Both of these are quite good at cleaning out any complete or developing clogs in the pipe. Even if one solution is insufficient for the task at hand, the other will very likely solve it.
