Signs That Your Water Heater Needs Repairs

Water heaters are designed to put up with a lot of wear and tear, but they are not invincible systems. They develop problems like any other home system, and those problems can become quite threatening if not handled in time. If you want your water heater to serve you well for as long as possible, you need to be able to recognize when it needs repairs. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the common signs that your water heater is in need of repairs.

Uneven Heating

It’s no fun to be taking a shower and suddenly hit with a blast of cold water. This is often due to a cracked or broken dip tube. The dip tube is a long, plastic tube that runs from the water line at the top of the tank to the bottom of the tank. It ensures that all new water flowing into the tank enters closest to the burner assembly, where it can be heated faster and won’t mix with the already-warm water flowing out of the tank. If the dip tube cracks or breaks, the water flowing into the tank will mix directly with the water flowing out of the tank. This is what leads to sudden spurts of cold water coming out of faucets and shower heads.

Leaks

Leaks should be taken very seriously when it comes to monitoring your water heater, even if they’re small ones. Leaks in the water heater tank, especially, often indicate that the anode rod in the system has failed. If the tank has rusted to the point where it has already developed leaks, it may be in danger of rupturing. Call for repairs as soon as you notice a leak anywhere in the system.
