Signs You Need a Water Treatment System

Most people don’t think they need a dedicated water treatment system in their home. While it’s true that the majority of cities put their water supplies through substantial treatment before pumping it into people’s homes, it’s not 100% effective. There will always be small amounts of minerals, elements, and other harmful materials that make it into your home. Let’s take a look at some of the signs you need a water treatment system.

Hard Water

Hard water is water with a higher than usual magnesium and calcium content. While this is not a threat to you, personally, it is a threat to your plumbing system. As hard water flows over a surface, like the inside of your pipes, it deposits small amounts of these elements. Eventually, the mineral deposits grow into lime scale, which blocks the flow of water through the pipe. This substantially decreases the efficiency of your plumbing system. Fortunately, a water softener can protect your home from hard water by neutralizing it before it makes it into your plumbing system.

Lead

If you’ve been following the news about Flint, MI over the past year or so, then you know how much damage high lead levels can cause. Most places in the country do not have dangerously high levels of lead in their water supplies. However, it should be noted that no amount of lead is considered safe, according to federal guidelines. An odd, metallic taste to your tap water could indicate the presence of fairly high levels of lead. If not lead, then it’s possible you may have some other harmful mineral causing the strange taste. Either way, it’s a good idea to make sure that you have a water treatment system installed in your home, just in case.
