3 Ways to Make Sure Your Furnace is Short-Lived

FurnaceThere are right and wrong ways to take care of your furnace if you want to last as long as possible. Most of the time, we talk about all the things that you should be doing to keep your furnace in top condition as long as you can. Today, though, we’d like to cover some of the things you should do if you want to waste your system’s life and replace it as early as possible. Let’s begin.

Install The Wrong Size

Properly sizing a furnace is a really important part of ensuring that it serves the home properly. If you want to make sure that your furnace lives a tragically short and problem-filled life, install one that’s too large or too small! If a furnace is too large, the thermostat will consistently shut it off before it has the chance to complete a full heating cycle. Constant short cycling will cause the furnace to wear out faster, develop problems more frequently, and eventually cause it to need to be replaced years early.

If you install a furnace that is too small, it will have to operate for longer than it was designed to in order to properly heat the home. This will cause the same issues as if the furnace was too large, causing the system to wear down and fail much sooner than it would have otherwise.

Don’t Schedule Maintenance

Maintenance services are perhaps the single greatest thing you could do to ensure the health of your furnace. Regular preventive maintenance gives your technician the chance to locate and resolve issues before they have the chance to develop far enough to threaten the system. So, if you want to make sure that your furnace is in the worst possible shape, don’t schedule maintenance!

Lots of homeowners think that if their furnace isn’t giving off obvious symptoms, they don’t need to call for repairs. Most furnace issues don’t give off any symptoms until they’re fairly advanced, though, which means that they’ve already started to damage the system by the time they’re noticed.

Ignore Signs of an Issue

I’m sure we’ve all had those times where we’ve avoided a doctor or dentist appointment because we don’t want to deal with the hassle of fixing whatever is wrong. If you’ve done that before, though, then you know that ignoring a problem only gives it more time to get worse. The same is true for furnaces.

If you happen to notice any signs that your furnace is experiencing issues, the best way to shorten its lifespan is to ignore it completely. Odd noises, drops in heating output, turning on and off rapidly, all are signs that the system is malfunctioning in some fashion. And the longer they are ignored, the worse they get.
